An Associateship Distinction of the Royal Photographic Society requires a body of work or project of 15 images of a high standard and a written Statement of Intent (for more information about the RPS see my Links page).
Statement of Intent:
This panel is to illustrate the concept that hands interact with the mind to implement its varied thoughts and ideas.
To this end I have photographed a selection of hands realizing what the mind envisages; making objects of utility and aesthetic beauty directly and by means of tools and machines;
expressing its thoughts and ideas in sign language or using touch to “see” when sight is very limited; creating an image of what the mind has visualized and anticipating a pastel to fulfill it.
Hands can enact contrasting impulses of the mind as in a spiritual response or projecting power through a gun;
Work safely with extreme temperatures and take nourishment when the job is done.
These examples illustrate why the extraordinary power of hands acting in consort with the mind has enabled humans to be so successful.
